Music

This one requires no introduction :-)

Nichole Nordeman – “Legacy”

Her music always makes me think. I love these words.

I don’t mind if you’ve got something nice to say about me
And I enjoy an accolade like the rest
And you can take my picture and hang it in a gallery
Of all the “who’s who’s” and so-and-so’s
That used to be the best at such and such
It wouldn’t matter much

I won’t lie, it feels alright to see your name in lights
We all need an “atta boy” or “atta girl”
But in the end I’d like to hang my hat on more besides
The temporary trappings of this world

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

I don’t have to look too far or too long awhile
To make a lengthy list of all that I enjoy
It’s an accumulating trinket and a treasure pile
Where moth and rust, thieves and such will soon
enough destroy

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

Not well-traveled, not well-read
Not well-to-do, or well-bred
I just want to hear instead
Well done, good and faithful one

I want to leave a legacy
How will they remember me?
Did I choose to love?
Did I point to You enough
To make a mark on things?
I want to leave an offering
A child of mercy and grace
Who blessed Your name unapologetically
And leave that kind of legacy

I don’t mind if you’ve got something nice to say about me

We returned late Saturday night from a trip to the Outer Banks, NC.  I would love to tell you all about it and share pictures right now, but just do not have the energy to do it tonight. I took far too many pictures, and need to narrow down a select few to share. I hope to squeeze in some posts this week, so check back!

So that you feel that it was worth your time to stop by the blog today, I’ll leave you with this:

FYI, this is neither our bird nor video. Someone sent it to me in an email a while back, and I got a chuckle out of it. This bird and George seem like they might get along. Remember this, from nearly a year ago?

Even though Memorial Day 2009 has passed, let’s not forget to pray for our troops and for those who have served.

I first heard this song on his Live… A Night of Stories & Songs CD/DVD set. Almost every song on it is as wonderful and moving as this one is. Mark Schultz is truly one of the most gift songwriters I’ve ever heard.

Here are the lyrics:

Letters from War

She walked to the mailbox
On that bright summers day
Found a letter from her son
In a war, far away

He spoke of the weather
And good friends that he’d made
Said, ” I’d been thinking ’bout dad
And the life that he had
That’s why I’m here today”
And then in the end he said, “You are what I’m fighting for”
It was the first of his letters from war

She started writing
“You’re good and you’re brave
What a father that you’ll be someday
Make it home, make it safe”
She wrote every night as she prayed

Late in December
A day, she’ll not forget
Oh, her tears stained the paper
With every word that she read

It said, “I was up on a hill, I was out there alone
When the shots all rang out and bombs were exploding
That’s when I saw him, he came back for me
And though he was captured a man set me free
And that man was your son, he asked me to write to you
I told him, I would, Oh, I swore”
It was the last of the letters from war

And she prayed he was living, kept on believing
And wrote every night just to say
“You are good and you’re brave
What a father that you’ll be someday
Make it home, make it safe”
Still she kept writing each day

Then two years later
Autumn leaves, all around
A car pulled in the driveway
And she fell to the ground
And out stepped a captain
Where her boy used to stand

He said, “Mom, I’m followin’ orders
From all of your letters and I’ve come home again”
He ran in to hold her, dropped all his bags on the floor
Holdin’ all of her letters from war

Bring him home
Bring him home
Bring him home

One of my favorite Easter songs, “Why” by Nichole Nordeman:

It’s a little early for Valentine’s Day, but I’m in the mood to listen to this song now. This is most likely because Iron Man went out of town tonight and I’m missing him.

WARNING: Be sure to grab a kleenex or two before viewing. Trust me on this.

Walking Her Home by Mark Schultz

Happy Valentine’s Day, Iron Man. Remember the days when you would walk me home in college?

Now that we are into December, it’s time for some Christmas music!

Welcome to Our World by Chris Rice (my favorite Christmas song)

While You Were Sleeping by Casting Crowns

Mary Did You Know by Mark Lowry

The 12 Days of Christmas by John Denver and the Muppets (love that Miss Piggy!)

Merry Christmas Darling by the Carpenters

Yesterday, we sang “Jesus Paid it All” in church. I’ve been singing this amazing song all day today, and found this version a few moments ago. This is a great song! Enjoy!

Who knew?

I’ve heard the beautiful song “Empty Me” several times on the radio and loved it. Just recently I found out who sings it. For you “American Idol” fans out there, remember Chris Sligh? How awesome it is to find this talented young man singing uplifting songs to the Lord.

Empty Me by Chris Sligh

I’ve had just enough of the spotlight when it burns bright
To see how it gets in the blood.
And I’ve tasted my share of the sweet life and the wild ride
And found a little is not quite enough.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

I’ve seen just enough of the quick buys of the best lies
To know how prodigals can be drawn away.
I know how I can stray
And how fast my heart could change.

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.

Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you, compared to you.
Cause everything is a lesser thing
Compared to you. So, I surrender all!

Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
Empty me of the selfishness inside
Every vain ambition and the poison of my pride
And any foolish thing my heart holds to
Lord empty me of me so I can be
Lord empty me of me so I can be filled with you.
Oh, filled with you.
Empty me.

We’re heading away for a lovely vacation to the beach, and I won’t be online for a while. I will be back in about a week with pictures and stories about our trip.

Before we go, I wanted to share this song that I just heard for the first time a couple days ago: “Slow Fade” by Casting Crowns. Apparently it was released in 2007, but somehow I had never heard it before. I posted the lyrics right after the video because they are so good. As a parent, I especially appreciated:

Be careful little feet where you go
For it’s the little feet behind you that are sure to follow

For me, the words are a reminder that I need to make a conscious decision daily to do what is right. The choices I make do not just affect me; they will have a profound influence on my children.

Slow Fade by Casting Crowns

Be careful little eyes what you see
It’s the second glance that ties your hands as darkness pulls the strings
Be careful little feet where you go
For it’s the little feet behind you that are sure to follow

Oh be careful little eyes what see
Oh be careful little eyes what you see
For the Father up above is looking down in love
Oh be careful little eyes what you see

It’s a slow fade when you give yourself away
It’s a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
It’s a slow fade, it’s a slow fade

Be careful little ears what you hear
When flattery leads to compromise, the end is always near
Be careful little lips what you say
For empty words and promises lead broken hearts astray

It’s a slow fade when you give yourself away
It’s a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day

The journey from your mind to your hands
Is shorter than you’re thinking
Be careful if you think you stand
You just might be sinking

It’s a slow fade when you give yourself away
It’s a slow fade when black and white have turned to gray
Thoughts invade, choices are made, a price will be paid
When you give yourself away
People never crumble in a day
Daddies never crumble in a day
Families never crumble in a day
